The campaign is limited to vehicles that have received replacement front passenger seat cushions during previous service appointments. The recall is focused on the capacitive interior sensing (CIS) equipment, located within the cushion, that determines if a small child or adult is sitting in the seat.
“The CIS functions may have been incorrectly calibrated, and if so, would cause impaired occupant classification and thus inappropriate air bag activation/deactivation,” the recall summary warns. “Inappropriate air bag activation/deactivation can increase the risk of occupant injury in the event of a vehicle crash.”
If the system is malfunctioning, the “passenger airbag off” lamp will illuminate when an adult is sitting in the front passenger seat.
The company claims to be unaware of any accidents or injuries involving the problem.
