Subaru has broke ground at its new headquarters site located in Camden, New Jersey.
The ceremony featured a display of historic Subaru vehicles from the company’s 50 years in the Delaware Valley. Rather than using a golden shovel or excavator to move the first pile of dirt, the Japanese automaker opted for a plow-equipped Outback.
The new base of operations, located in the Knights Crossing community next to the Campbell Soup Company’s headquarters, will require $118 million to construct. It will serve as a centralized location, absorbing separate offices that are currently located in Pennsauken and Cherry Hill. A distribution and training center will remain at its current location in Florence.
The campus will include two primary buildings, one measuring 250,000 square feet and another with 83,000 square feet. The facility will more than double the size of Subaru’s current headquarters, bringing more than 600 employees and contractors into the city of Camden.
Subaru expects to begin moving into the new buildings by the end of 2017.
