Following the diesel emissions revelations, the company last month warned that around 800,000 vehicles, including diesel and gasoline variants, may have been sold with underreported CO2 emissions estimates.
A subsequent investigation has narrowed the range of offending vehicles down to just 36,000 units, according to Reuters. The initial figure appears to have been a cautious “worst case scenario” estimate.
The problem is believed to be focused on Euro-spec cars, including the 2.0-liter TDI Golf and the 2.0-liter TDI Passat. The CO2 emissions discrepancy is said to be limited to “a few grams,” equating to a tenth to a fifth of extra diesel consumption per 100 kilometers (62 miles).
The company is set to hold a press conference on Thursday, providing updates on the proposed refits for millions of non-compliant TDI vehicles that cheat emissions tests in the US, EU and other markets.
