The British automaker earlier this year suggested Alabama was the ‘obvious choice‘ for the facility, which will be primarily focused on building the upcoming DBX crossover.
Despite the apparent confidence in the American South, the company is now considering alternative sites. One is said to be located in the Middle East, while two are at home in the UK.
“The board is reviewing the options and will make a decision by the end of the year or the first few weeks of January,” an unnamed source told Reuters.
Wherever the factory is placed, it will be important in Aston’s “Second Century” revitalization strategy. Amid a struggle to regain profitability, the company has vowed to replace every model in its lineup by the end of the decade. The DBX crossover is eventually expected to account for more than half of its total global sales, with a particular focus on the US and China.
Approximately 300 jobs were eliminated in October, representing 15 percent of the company’s total workforce. Most of the cuts involved managerial and administrative positions, rather than manufacturing jobs. The layoffs are not expected to affect the plans for another factory.
