The most important update is the arrival of a brand new twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine that replaces the 2015 model’s aging Nissan-derived 3.7-liter six. It generates 300 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 295 lb-ft. of torque from 1,600 to 5,200 rpm in its most basic state of tune. However, buyers who want more power can order the new-for-2016 Q50 Red Sport, a range-topping trim equipped with an evolution of the V6 that delivers 400 ponies at 6,400 rpm and a healthy 350 lb-ft. of torque from 1,600 to 5,200 rpm.
Moving down, the Q50′s base engine is a 2.0-liter turbo four that produces 208 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 258 lb-ft. of torque from just 1,500 rpm. All of the three aforementioned engines come standard with rear-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic transmission controlled by shift paddles, but motorists who regularly tackle adverse weather conditions can order all-wheel drive at an extra cost.
The hybrid powertrain carries over unchanged, meaning it’s made up of a 3.5-liter V6 and a 50-kilowatt electric motor. Together, the two power sources make 360 horsepower.
The mechanical updates are complemented by the next generation of Infiniti’s Direct Adaptive Steering, which can make up to 1,000 adjustments per seconds, and a new Dynamic Digital Suspension (DDS) that lets the driver alternate between a firm, sport-biased ride and a more plush, comfort-focused ride at the flick of a switch. DDS also uses sensors to monitor the movement of the shock absorbers in real time in order to soak up bumps and other road imperfections.
The 2016 Infiniti Q50 will make its public debut next month at the Detroit Motor Show, and it will go on sale across the nation shortly after. Pricing information and performance specifications will be published at a later date.
