BMW is expanding its M Laptimer application to include GoPro camera integration. BMW’s BMW Apps and MINI Connect have featured GoPro compatibility since 2014.
Like BMW’s current GoPro functionality, the M Laptimer app requires a connected smart phone, but drivers can control the GoPro camera via iDrive and the vehicle’s center-mounted infotainment screen. Once linked up, the GoPro will start recording whenever the M Laptimer app is fired up, and will automatic stop recording when the app is switched off.
“The BMW M Laptimer and GoPro integrations have both proven to be incredibly popular with driving enthusiasts. From the time that we launched the first in-car integration for a GoPro camera, bringing that integration together with the BMW M Laptimer seemed like the natural way to really enhance the track driving experience,” said Christian Schmid, senior development engineer at the BMW Group Technology Office USA. “This allows us to provide BMW drivers the ability to safely capture and share their track experience.”
In addition to the footage saved on the GoPro camera, the app will also save a low-resolution version of the video to the connect smartphone, enabling the driver to watch their lap below the M Laptimer’s map view.
The M Laptimer app’s standard data readout will remain unchanged when using the GoPro function. The app will continue to record several vehicle aspects when in use, including vehicle speed, brake input and g-force. BMW says the M Laptimer app is intended for off-road use only.
