Is this Lamborghini’s Paris-bound Asterion concept? [Update]

September 28, 2014
Low resolution images leaked out of a car magazine might have prematurely revealed the Lamborghini Asterion concept. Lamborghini’s newest show car is scheduled to greet the public for the first time at the Paris Motor Show that will open its doors to the press next Thursday.

The Asterion was previewed last week by a mysterious teaser image accompanied by the caption “once perfection is achieved, you can just double it,” fueling speculations that the show car will offer a 2+2 seating arrangement. One of the leaked images all but confirms the rumors by showing the concept next to a 400 GT, a Touring-bodied four-seater coupe built in limited numbers from 1966 to 1968.

Interestingly, the leaked images reveal the Asterion borrows styling cues such as a relatively tall front end with two large air dams from the Urus crossover. Although the coupe looks essentially ready for production, Lamborghini is keeping official details under wraps so it is too early to tell if it is merely a design study or if it will be added to the company’s lineup in the coming months.

A leaked magazine article written in Italian states the Asterion is powered by Lamborghini’s first-ever gasoline-electric hybrid drivetrain. The system uses a V10 engine and three electric motors to generate over 900 horsepower, nearly as much grunt as McLaren’s P1 hybrid. Large air vents behind the doors announce the V10 remains mid-mounted in spite of the presumably larger cabin.

Additional details about the Lamborghini Asterion will emerge in the coming days, and the car will greet the public for the first time on October 2nd in Paris.
