Iowa has reportedly moved forward with plans to offer a smartphone-based digital driver’s license.
The state is on track to be the first to develop a smartphone app that it describes as an ‘identity vault,’ which will be accepted as formal identification by law enforcement, according to a report in The Des Moines Register.

Drivers will still receive a plastic identification card, but it can be left in a wallet or purse.
The app offering is viewed as a natural extension of a general move toward digital documentation, such as electronic proof of insurance. The digital identification is said to be secured via a PIN to help protect against misuse.
The Iowa Department of Transportation has not yet announced a launch date for the new technology.
