The company did not detail which markets will receive the range-topping performance hatchback, however the announcement appears to corroborate rumors pointing to a US launch.
Previous reports suggest the redesigned Focus RS will be powered by the company’s new 2.3-liter turbocharged EcoBoost engine, which produces 310 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque in the new Mustang. It is expected to be all-wheel drive, with a more aggressive body and stiffer suspension than the Focus ST.
“To earn the RS badge, the vehicle has to be a no-compromise driver’s car that can deliver exceptional performance on the track when required while providing excellent every day driving,” said Ford development head, Raj Nair.
The Focus RS will be one of more than a dozen new Ford performance vehicles that will be launched under the Ford Performance banner by 2020. Following the blueprint of the company’s One Ford initiative, the new Ford Performance brand will roll all of the company’s high-performance vehicles into one division. Previously, Ford’s performance car were fractured into different groups such as SVT and RS.
