VW-owned Skoda teases next Superb flagship

December 14, 2014
Undermining the work of spy photographers, Volkswagen’s Czech Republic-based Škoda division has published official spy shots of its next Superb flagship.
Ambitiously billed as the best Škoda of all time, the new Superb will ride on the same modular MQB platform as many recent Volkswagen products including the A3, the Euro-spec eighth-generation Passat and the seventh-gen Golf. Switching to the MQB platform will allow the next Superb to weigh about 165 pounds less than the current model while being marginally longer and wider.

The teaser images suggest the Superb will adopt a more chiseled design that will borrow styling cues from the mid-size Octavia and the Fabia city car. It will retain the current model’s innovative Twindoor, a setup that makes it possible to open either the trunk lid or the full hatch.

The Superb will be offered with several Volkswagen-sourced four-cylinder gasoline- and diesel-burning engines with outputs ranging from 120 to 260 horsepower. Power will be sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission, though a dual-clutch DSG unit and all-wheel drive will both be available at an extra cost.

The second-gen Škoda Superb will make its debut at a private event held in Prague next February and it will be presented to the public a month later at the Geneva Motor Show. Additional details about the Czech automaker’s next flagship will trickle out over the coming months.
