Some Republican lawmakers in Tennessee are starting to raise their eyebrows at unionization efforts at Volkswagen‘s Chattanooga assembly plant.
Volkswagen chose the facility for production of a new SUV in part due to a $300 million investment package arranged by local lawmakers. According to the Associated Press (via CNBC), State Senator Bo Watson warned legislators last year that the incentive package, which still requires legislative approval, could be jeopardized by full unionization of the facility.

“At the end of the day, we’ll settle on what is in the best interests of the citizens,” Watson told the Chattanooga Times Free Press. “Each individual legislator will take a position that best represents his district.”
Volkswagen is known for being pro-labor, and its own global works council worked with the UAW and other labor organizations to help unionize the Tennessee facility in 2014.
