CES LIVE: Maserati QNX Technology Concept

January 8, 2015
BlackBerry’s QNX division has brought a modified Maserati Quattroporte to CES, demonstrating the company’s vision for safety and infotainment technology.
The sedan has been outfitted with a bevy of cameras, LiDAR equipment, ultrasonic sensors, a digital instrument cluster, a gigantic infotainment touchscreen and additional displays that function as side- and rear-view mirrors.

As a showcase of QNX’ driver-assistance systems, the modified Quattroporte uses cameras to provide a video feed to the mirrors. LiDAR and sonar provide an extra layer of security, helping spot obstacles in the road ahead, with warnings presented on the digital instrument cluster. Additional warnings appear in the digital ‘mirrors’ if the sensors identify anything in blind spots.

The Maserati also demonstrates QNX’ latest infotainment platform, with a refined interface spread across the large touchscreen on the center console. It supports smartphone integration, third-party apps and gesture input. The company notes that its voice recognition system is capable of listening to natural commands, even registering “it’s way too cold in here” as a prompt to raise the cabin heat.

The QNX software architecture already powers infotainment and safety features for production vehicles from most automakers, ranging from Audi to Ford. The Maserati concept appears to represent QNX’ biggest push to establish itself as a publicly-known brand in the automotive industry, rather than continuing to operate as a quiet supplier working out of the limelight.
