Tesla CEO: Model 3 will cost less than the Chevy Bolt

January 16, 2015
Tesla Motors chief Elon Musk has downplayed the competitive threat from the Chevrolet Bolt.
The executive insists that the company’s Model 3 will arrive on the market for $35,000, before government incentives. He suggests General Motors CEO Mary Barra’s $30,000 price tag for the Bolt is a reference to the post-incentive price, making the real sticker $37,500.

The Bolt and Model 3 are said to be aiming for market arrival as early as 2017, though both will be relying on batteries with higher power density, and lower prices, to hit their targets of 200-mile range and mass-market price tags. While the Bolt is a subcompact hatchback, the Model 3 is expected to be a midsize near-luxury sedan, similar to the BMW 3-Series.

Musk has welcomed competition in the electric-vehicle market, but he maintains derisive of hydrogen-powered cars that are under development by Toyota and Honda.

“I just think that they’re extremely silly,” he said at a recent event, as quoted by Autoblog. “You can’t tell when [hydrogen is] leaking. It’s extremely flammable. If you’re going to choose an energy, it’s a dumb one to pick.”

Both Tesla and GM have not yet finalized launch dates for their respective 200-mile EVs.
