Musk took to Twitter on Thursday to announce that he will soon construct a Hyperloop test track. No groundbreaking date was given, but Musk said the Hyperloop testing facility will likely be built in Texas.
“Will be building a Hyperloop test track for companies and student teams to test out their pods,” Musk said. “Most likely in Texas.”
Musk also Tweeted that he wants to establish an “annual student Hyperloop pod race competition.”
Essentially a high-speed mass transportation system, the Hyperloop project consists of a passenger pod that can be rocketed down a tube track at speeds up to 800mph. When he announced the concept back in 2013, Musk described it as a “cross between a Concorde, rail gun and air-hockey table.”
Musk doesn’t seem to have much interest in completing the project, but the Tesla CEO previously stated that he could help get the idea off the ground.
“I’ve come around a little bit on my thinking here,” he told Reuters. “Maybe I could do the beginning bit… and then hand it over to somebody else.”
Newly founded Hyperloop Tranportation Technologies Inc. could be the company to run with the torch. If successful, it might be possible to one day travel via Hyperloop from LA to San Francisco in just 30 minutes.
