Ford confirms $2.5B production expansion in Mexico

April 18, 2015
Confirming recent reports, Ford has announced a $2.5 billion plan to build two new factories in Mexico.
The expansion will include a new engine plant in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, expansion of an existing engine factory at the same site, and a new transmission factory in Guanajuato. The three initiatives will eventually require an additional 3,800 workers.

“Ford is making a significant commitment to our business in Mexico with investment in two new facilities, while aiming to make our vehicles even more fuel-efficient with a new generation of engines and transmissions our team in Mexico will build,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s president of the Americas.

The Chihuahua plant will receive approximately half of the investment, allowing the company to build a new gasoline engine alongside the existing I-4 and diesel assembly lines.

The transmission plant, which accounts for the majority of the new jobs, will be used to build two all-new automatic gearboxes for vehicles headed to South America, Europe and the Asia Pacific.

The company currently employ more than 11,000 workers in Mexico, helping build the Ford Fiesta, Fusion and Lincoln MKZ.
