The new G500 SUV borrows the Mercedes-AMG GT‘s 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, tuned to produce 422 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. The output numbers represent a jump of 40 ponies and 59 lb-ft of twist compared to the 5.5-liter mill in the outgoing G550 model.
The minimize the G500′s encroachment on the G63 AMG’s territory, the G63′s 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8 has been upgraded to produce 563 horsepower and 561 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, the range-topping G65 AMG’s enormous twin-turbocharged V12 has been tweaked to deliver 621 ponies and 738 lb-ft of torque.
The company suggests the new and updated engines help reduce fuel consumption, meeting the more stringent Euro 6 emissions standards.
The 2016 model year also brings a revised suspension setup, promising both improved ride comfort and stability. An optional active suspension system provides an even higher level of user-selectable adjustments depending on the current driving conditions. Stability control and ABS management benefit from modern electronics for improved safety.
The revised G-Class SUVs are visually distinguished by restyled bumpers and standard AMG flared wheel arches across the board, while the interiors have been outfitted with revised two-tone instrument clusters.
Many or all of the same changes are expected to be introduced for the US version, however Mercedes-Benz has not yet fully detailed global launch plans for the 2016 lineup.
