Audi has lifted the veil on its latest 2.0 TFSI four-cylinder engine at the Vienna Motor Symposium. Fitted with a new combustion method, Audi promises the new 2.0L will be more efficient than the version on sale today.
Although similar to the 2.0L TSFI found in Audis today – both engines feature turbocharging and direct-injection technology – the new motor has a few key updates. The engine’s intake time has been significantly shortened thanks to a narrower crank angle. The intake valve has also been designed to close earlier, resulting in a more efficient compression ratio. Audi says the new combustion principle is similar to the Miller cycle.

Additionally, the new engine, which weighs just 308 pounds, boasts a shorter warm up time, an exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head and low friction engine oil, all of which help to boost overall efficiency.
Despite this improvements, power output is actually down compared to today’s 2.0L – 190 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque compared to 220 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. However, max torque is available over a broader 1,450 to 4,400 rpm range.
The new 2.0 TFSI engine will first appear in the next-generation Audi A4 where it will be good for 47mpg on the European cycle. Audi hasn’t announced whether the new mill we be available in the U.S.-spec A4.
