UK buyers clamoring for Mustang’s V8, manual transmission

August 25, 2015

The Ford Mustang, once a forbidden fruit for those residing outside of North America, is proving to be a popular option for UK petrol heads.

Since Ford’s UK arm began taking orders for the first of its kind right-hand-drive Mustang in January, the automaker has racked up 2,000 orders. Of those initial hand raisers, 80 percent have opted for the coupe over the convertible. Perhaps more interestingly, a full 70 percent have sprung for the Mustang’s optional 5.0L V8 over the car’s standard 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder. That’s quite the take rate given fuel prices in the UK.

Just over half of those Mustang orders, 55 percent, have been for the six-speed manual. The other 45 percent of Mustang buyers have opted for the car’s six-speed automatic transmission.

It should come as little surprise that the vast majority of Mustangs are being built in enthusiast’s spec. Buyers in the UK have been unable to purchase the Mustang for the last five decades, and there is clearly pent up demand for the rortiest version of the iconic pony car.

The Mustang EcoBoost carries a base price of £29,995 in the UK, while the V8-powered GT goes for £33,995. Right-hand-drive Mustangs are currently rolling out of Ford’s Flatrock Assembly Plant with the first UK deliveries slated for November.
