SEMA LIVE: Mazda MX-5 Miata Spyder, Speedster

November 6, 2015

Mazda has unveiled its MX-5 Miata design concepts — the Spyder and Speedster — this week at SEMA.

The Spyder takes inspiration from vintage roadsters, featuring a redesigned bikini top and a unique Mercury Silver paint scheme. Other upgrades include a carbon-fiber aero kit, grille intake and tonneau cover, along with Yokohama Advan Racing RS II rubber on 17-inch wheels.

The interior maintains the classic roadster theme, with extensive use of Spinneybeck ‘Prima’ premium leather in a brown color to match the customized folding top.

The Speedster takes a different approach, focusing on lightweight performance — it weighs just 2,080 pounds, less than the original Miata NA chassis and 250 pounds shy of the current production model.

Designers eliminated the front windshield and replaced it with a small deflector, aiming for an “unadulterated, wind-in-the-hair driving experience” that evokes the open-top sports cars of the 1950s. Custom 16-inch Rays Extreme Gram Lights wheels bring a reduction in unsprung weight, while ride height has been dropped by 30mm on adjustable coilovers.

The Speedster’s performance-focused interior features Mu-Len Delta carbon-fiber seats seats, Alcantara trim and carbon-fiber doors.

Both adaptations will be on display all week at Mazda’s booth in the Las Vegas Convention Center.
