Billed as the “new face of Buick,” the 2017 LaCrosse has been unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
The sedan is heavily inspired by the Avenir concept that first appeared earlier this year in Detroit. Both share a new waterfall grille design accented by wing-shape elements spanning from the new tri-color shield insignia, paying homage to the 1954 Wildcat II concept.
The LaCrosse’s headlights and lower bumper are also consistent with the Avenir, however the production car loses the concept’s tapered rear end in favor of a more traditional design.
The third-generation sedan is longer, wider and lower than its predecessor, yet approximately 300 pounds lighter. The weight savings is associated with press-hardened high-strength steels and new sound-absorbing materials, including a lightweight ‘dissipative dash,’ that replace traditional noise-blocking pads.
Engineers revised the suspension system, adding a new five-link setup for the rear and available HiPer struts up front. Buyers can also choose electronically-controlled air dampers, switchable between plush ‘Touring’ or firmer ‘Sport’ modes.
The LaCrosse is powered by an all-new 3.6-liter V6 engine with direct injection, cylinder deactivation and stop/start tech. General Motors expects the powerplant to deliver 305 horsepower and 268 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, though a dual-clutch all-wheel-drive system is also available.
An all-new noise-reducing cam drive system contributes to a quieter engine compartment. Other quieting features include active noise cancellation, acoustic wheelhouse liners, an acoustic-laminated windshield and front side windows, triple-sealed doors and better body sealing.
The sedan is said to be the first Buick with a single cockpit design aesthetic, flowing across the instrument panel and into the doors. A ‘floating’ center console places the shift controller higher and closer to the driver, while an eight-inch display has been placed in the center of the gauge cluster.
Three interior trim packages are available, all available with ‘Moon White’ ambient lighting and eight-way-adjustable heated and ventilated front seats. A heated steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, power rear sunshade and premium Bose stereo system are also on the options list.
The new LaCrosse will presumably arrive in showrooms sometime next year, however pricing and specific launch details remain unclear.
