UAW workers approve new contracts for Ford, GM

Organized workers at Ford and General Motors have ratified respective new contracts, putting an end to the protracted negotiation process for the big three US automakers.

The renewed deal with Ford passed by a narrow margin, receiving approval from 51.4 percent of workers in a late-Friday vote.

“Our UAW members have ratified the national agreement after a long process and much debate,” said UAW president Dennis Williams in an announcement for the Ford deal. “The voice of the majority has secured a strong future that will provide job security and economic stability for themselves and their families.”

he GM agreement was met with slightly more support from 55.4 percent of UAW employees. The negotiations had hit a snag due to disagreements with skilled-trades workers, despite previously receiving support from the broader UAW-GM membership.

“Following discussions with GM, the parties agreed to changes that protect core trades classifications and seniority rights,” the UAW noted.

In the separate and unique contracts with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Ford and GM, the UAW is believed to have focused on minimizing the pay disparity between two-tier workers. In some cases, the parties also agreed to compromises for production shifts, allowing some nameplates to move to Mexico factories in return for a commitment to expand and refocus truck and SUV production in the US.
