Spied: Volkswagen’s three-row SUV caught in Los Angeles

April 2, 2016

Volkswagen’s new three-row CUV has been caught wearing little camouflage in Los Angeles, showing off its production lines and a couple of paint colors.

VW has yet to formally identify its upcoming three-row, but from the looks of it, it was clearly inspired by the Cross Coupe GTE concept that was shown in Detroit a year ago.

It’s entirely possible that VW will simply let it wear the Tiguan nameplate, as we’ve known for a while that the aging crossover’s replacement will come in two- and three-row variants for the first time, allowing it to compete with true midsize CUVs.

Offering both variants under the same nameplate would be similar to Hyundai’s approach with the Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport.

Volkswagen has remained tight-lipped about mechanical details, but it’s a safe bet that two-row models will be offered with turbocharged four-cylinder engines while the three-row will likely be available with a variant of Volkswagen’s VR6, at least in the range-topping model. The Cross Coupe GTE concept featured a hybrid system based on Volkswagen’s narrow-angle V6.

The three-row variant pictured here will likely be introduced to America (along with a few other markets) in late 2016.
