The Ram’s 3.0L V6 EcoDiesel is also thrifty in city driving, earning a 20mpg rating on the agency’s city cycle. The EPA says the Ram EcoDiesel should return 23mpg in mixed driving.
All three marks are good for tops in the full-size pickup truck segment.
“The new Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is truly in a class of it’s own with 28mpg and the ability to tow 9,200 pounds,” said Reid Bigland, President and CEO of the Ram brand. “To put the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel in context, it gets 6 mpg better fuel economy than the best F150 EcoBoost. Overall the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel has outstanding pick-up truck capability with compact car-like fuel economy.”
The 2014 Ram EcoDiesel is powered by a 3.0L turbo diesel sourced from Fiat’s VM Motori. The V6 is good for 240 horsepower and a V8-rivaling 420 lb-ft of torque. The diesel engine shifts through Ram’s new eight-speed automatic transmission.
Ram will begin taking orders for the 2014 1500 EcoDiesel on February 7. The truck will carry a base MSRP of $24,200 (not including a $1,195 destination charge), or about $2,850 more than a comparably equipped HEMI V8 model.
Including the 25mpg 3.6L V6 1500 model, Ram now holds the top two efficiency spots in the full-size truck segment.
