Chicago LIVE: Volvo S60 Polestar

February 6, 2014

Volvo has traveled to Chicago to debut the performance-focused Polestar variant of its S60 sedan. Like its V60 sibling, this limited-edition variant turns up the wick with a number of engine, suspension and brake enhancements.

The sedan’s engine bay is home to upgraded version of the standard model’s 3.0-liter straight-six that Volvo tuning partner Polestar has fitted with a new twin-scroll turbocharger. In conjunction with retuned engine management software, that change is enough to increase output from 325 horsepower to 345 ponies. Torque also climbs from 354 to 369 lb-ft at 2,800 rpm.

With output sent to all four wheels through a six-speed automatic and a new Polestar-developed Haldex all-wheel-drive system, sixty mph arrives from a dead stop in a claimed 4.7 seconds.

To keep the extra muscle in check, the S60 Polestar features 80 percent stiffer springs and uprated Ohlins shocks. New brakes – with ventilated discs measuring 14.6 inches up front and 11.8 inches at rear – sit behind 20-inch model-specific wheels.

Passerby can distinguish the Polestar from humbler S60s by its unique front and rear splitters, along with a rear spoiler and diffuser, additions that also serve to increase downforce and improve aerodynamics. The cabin benefits from Polestar-specific materials and colors in addition to a sportier steering wheel and seats.

Volvo says that the S60 Polestar, along with the V60 Polestar, will begin arriving at select dealership in June; only 120 examples will be offered in the U.S.
