The MX-5 has sold a total of 920,000 globally as of December 2013, achieving and holding a Guinness Book of World Records status of “best-selling two-seater sports car.”
“The MX-5 Miata has hit a number of milestones over the years and we’re honored to say that 25 years later it’s as much a global success and favorite among enthusiasts as it was on day one,” said Mazda North America CEO Jim O’Sullivan.
The first edition launched with a $13,800 price tag and offered a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with 116 horsepower and 100 lb-ft of torque. The 2,116 lb car could be brought up to 60 mph in just under nine seconds.
Performance and handling have since improved through two more generations. The current model features a 2.0-liter powerplant that produces 170 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of torque, with choices between manual and automatic transmissions.
Drivers currently have a number of small roadsters to choose from, however the Miata has faced little competition in its price bracket.
