Ford dealership pays customers $300K after losing Super Bowl bet

February 12, 2014
A Missouri Ford dealership has reportedly paid approximately $300,000 to customers, after losing a long-odds bet during the Super Bowl.

The dealership had run a “Super Weekend Sale” promotion that promised to repay customers for the purchase price of any car bought between January 29 and February 1 if the opening kickoff in the first or second half of the game resulted in a touchdown.

Hutcheson Ford suggests there was only a 2.5-percent chance of such an occurrence, however Seattle’s Percy Harvin opened the second half by returning the kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown.

“At least we’re not like that furniture guy that lost $7 million,” said Hutcheson Ford marketing manager Kathleen Frazier, according to quotes posted by Automotive News.

Unlike the Houston furniture store, which promised to give full refunds for two weeks of purchases if the Seahawks won, the dealership obtained an insurance policy to cover part of the losses. The Ford dealership has not disclosed the cost of insurance, though a Seattle-area Chevy dealer paid $7,000 to insure another football promotion that paid out $420,000.

A total of 12 customers purchased cars during the weekend, with values ranging from $10,000 to $55,000.

The dealership plans to run another Super Weekend sale next year.
