Mercedes unveils Sprinter Camper concept

September 2, 2013
Mercedes-Benz’s commercial vehicles division has traveled to the annual Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf, Germany, to unveil a camper concept based on the 2014 Sprinter van.

Finished in a discreet shade called Tenorite Gray Metallic, the camper concept looks like a regular high-roof Sprinter van from the outside. Mercedes designers did this on purpose because they wanted the camper to retain a low-key appearance.

A glance inside reveals a luxurious interior designed to comfortably sleep two people. It boasts a leather-upholstered sofa bed, a flat-screen TV, several closets, a small kitchen equipped with a sink, a stove and a fridge, and a bathroom that features a toilet and a shower. Up front, the Sprinter offers two swivel seats upholstered in white leather.

Mechanically, the concept is powered by a diesel-burning 3.0-liter CDI V6 engine that sends 190 horsepower and 324 lb-ft. of torque to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. The effect that the added weight has on the van’s performance is not known.

Mercedes has not announced if it will offer the Sprinter Camper concept as a regular-production model, but there are several aftermarket companies in Europe and North America that specialize in converting the commercial van into a luxurious studio apartment on wheels. <![CDATA[
