GM: Chevrolet to sell 5 million cars globally in 2013

September 2, 2013
With four selling months to go in the year, General Motors is optimistic that its high-volume Chevrolet division will reach the 5 million mark for the first time ever.

Chevrolet has seen substantial investment over the last few years as GM has sought to expand it into a mainstream global division rather than a primarily regional brand. Last year, GM sold 4.95 million bowtie-branded vehicles across the globe, about 65 percent of which were outside of North America.

In particular, GM has seen strong demand in the Middle East – despite continued unrest in the region.Â

“We haven’t seen what’s happening in Egypt, Syria or Lebanon affect the overall market,” GM regional president and managing director John Stadwick said. “The Egyptian market is exceeding their sales forecast.”

Stadwick cited a youthful population and rising GDPs in certain Mideast countries as reasons why GM continues to invest there.

Chevrolet sells a variety of cars in the Middle East, some of which – like its big SUVs – are sourced from North America. Emerging markets like Egypt, on the other hand, have Chevrolet lineups composed more of small cars plucked primarily from GM subsidiaries in Asia. <![CDATA[
