VW scraps BlueSport, green lights new Phaeton

March 11, 2014
Volkswagen’s development chief has officially canceled plans for a small sports car, but is moving forward with a replacement for the slow-selling Phaeton flagship.

Speaking with the UK’s Autocar on the sideline of the Geneva Motor Show, VW development boss Heinz-Jakob Neusser confirmed that the German automaker has pulled the plug on a mid-engine sports car previewed by the BlueSport concept, but says work continues on the next-generation Phaeton.

Neusser said that he “personally likes the idea” of a VW sports car along the lines of the BlueSport, but cited a shrinking market segment for the project’s demise.

Although VW is closing the door on one niche segment, it’s keeping another open for its flagship Phaeton sedan. Despite selling in low numbers, VW will keep the Phaeton around as a developing ground for cutting edge technologies.

“We use all the technology and develop it for other VWs and group brands,” said Neusser. “It’s actually got a very attractive business case.”

Neusser promises that “the next Phaeton has to be class leading” and be “very smooth and luxurious” to drive.

VW could preview the next Phaeton sometime this year
