NY Preview: 2015 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe

March 19, 2014

Mercedes-Benz will travel to next month’s New York Motor Show to unveil the 2015 S63 AMG Coupe.

Based on the S-Class Coupe that bowed in Geneva a few weeks ago, the S63 packs a hand-built 5.5-liter V8 engine that makes 577 horsepower and 664 lb-ft. of torque thanks to the use of two beefy turbochargers. Power is sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed MCT Speedshift transmission.

The 4,400-pound S63 sprints from zero to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 186 mph. Fuel economy is kept in check by a standard start/stop system, but official EPA figures are not available yet.

Visually, the S63 looks more aggressive than the S-Class Coupe thanks to twin-blade radiator grille with mesh inserts, a revised front bumper with large air dams, AMG-specific alloy wheels, quad exhaust pipes and an air diffuser integrated into the rear bumper. Bespoke emblems all around wrap up the look.

The S63 AMG weighs 140 pounds less than the outgoing CL63 AMG by using weight-saving components like a lithium-ion battery and aluminum body panels. A full air suspension comes standard.

Inside, the latest addition to the AMG lineup packs a thick-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel, aluminum pedals and power-adjustable sport seats upholstered in Nappa leather. The AMG emblem is embossed in the center armrest.

Edition 1

Continuing a recently-established tradition, Mercedes will kick off the S63 AMG Coupe’s production run by briefly offering a limited-edition model called Edition 1. It will feature numerous standard features including a Magno Alanite Gray matte paint job, Swarovski crystals in the headlights, carbon ceramic brakes and a two-tone red and black leather upholstery with contrast stitching.

After debuting in the Big Apple, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe will go on sale across the United States next fall. Pricing information will be published closer to its on-sale date.

What’s Next?
A range-topping V12-powered variant of the S Coupe dubbed S65 AMG Coupe is expected to greet the public at next October’s Paris Motor Show.
