Volkswagen Group’s Spanish brand has officially announced plans to produce a new compact SUV, which is said to have been under development for the past two years.
“The SUV is an important pillar in the future corporate strategy and is a major step forward on the road to reaching sustainable profitability for the company,” said company chairman Jürgen Stackmann.
A separate unconfirmed report suggests Alfa Romeo may be finally committing to its planned SUV launch. Unnamed sources have told Auto Express the new model will be based on Alfa’s new rear- and four-wheel drive Giorgio platform.
The leak arrives more than a decade after Alfa first revealed its Kamal SUV concept, which resurfaced in 2010 but never came to fruition. Later reports suggested the company was actually working on two SUVs, including a compact model and a larger design based on the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s platform.
Neither company has revealed any additional details surrounding their new SUVs.
