The issue is said to be limited to six-cylinder powerplants. In certain cases, bolts retaining the variable timing (Vanos) system housing are said to be prone to loosening or breaking. Left unfixed, oil loss and subsequent problems with timing may cause the engine to fail.
Vehicles affected by the potential defect are said to include certain 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5, X6 and Z4 models with model years ranging from 2010 through 2012, along with the 2012 6 Series.
The recall promises to replace four bolts in approximately 489,000 vehicles worldwide, including about 156,000 in the US. The company also will provide an extended warranty for another 170,000 vehicles that have demonstrated a lower rate of failure.
The issue has not been officially blamed for any accidents or deaths.
