The drop-top model features the same basic supercar specs as its hardtop counterpart, which was revealed earlier this year in Detroit. Chevrolet’s supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 engine delivers at least 625 horsepower and 635 lb-ft of torque. Power is delivered to the wheels via seven-speed manual transmission with rev matching, or the new 8L90 eight-speed paddle-shift automatic.
The new chassis has been designed with a convertible in mind; its aluminum structure is 20 percent stiffer than the outgoing fixed-roof Z06. Consequently, the latest drop-top model is claimed to avoid any penalty in terms of curb weight or handling.
“Until recently it was not possible to create a lightweight, open-roof structure strong enough to cope with the braking, cornering, and acceleration of Corvette’s top performance models,” said Corvette chief engineer Tadge Juechter.
Buyers seeking the open-air experience can even opt for the range-topping Z07 Performance Package, adding Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires and adjustable front and rear aerodynamic components, among other features.
The electronic top can be lowered remotely using the key fob, or on the fly at speeds of up to 30 mph. The thick fabric top is available in four colors, each with sound-absorbing padding and a glass rear window.
The Z06 convertible will be on display at the New York auto show alongside two other new Chevrolet models.
