The potential move is said to be primarily driven by ever-tightening emissions regulations, rather than solely serving as a way to bolster sales.
“Electric vehicles are [effective] products to help cope with these new regulations,” said Yasuyuki Yoshinaga, president of Subaru parent Fuji Heavy Industries, in an interview with The Japan News.
The company has not completely ignored the segment in the US, however its current electirified offerings are limited to just one model. The XV Crosstrek Hybrid pairs a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor that adds 13.4 horsepower, supporting EV operation up to approximately 13 mph and improving the torque curve.
Separate reports suggest Subaru may be developing a new three-row crossover with an optional plug-in diesel hybrid powertrain, adding a Toyota-sourced hybrid system to a 2.0-liter turbodiesel boxer engine. All-wheel-drive capabilities would be handled by two motors at the rear axle.
The company is expected to make a formal announcement regarding its EV plans by the end of the year.
