The new oil burner will be offered in two basic variations, one that produces 218 horsepower and another that claims 272 ponies. Peak torque is as high as 442.5 lb-ft, presumably for the latter model.
In contrast, the current 3.0-liter TDI engine offered in the Q7 is rated for 240 horsepower and 408 lb-ft of torque.
Engineers have worked to minimize friction on the piston rings and pins, while the crankcase and cylinder heads now have separate coolant loops. The turbocharger and variable-load oil pump have also been updated.
The changes are claimed to bring a fuel-efficiency improvement of approximately 13 percent compared to the current-generation 3.0-liter TDI mill. Emissions are said to be reduced through a NOx storage catalytic converter, diesel particulate filter and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) injection, all built into a single assembly.
“The new 3.0 TDI substantiates our claim as the leader in diesel technology,” said Audi Chairman Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackengerg. “We have led the competition ever since the first TDI engine 25 years ago, and are constantly extending this lead with new ideas.”
The company has not yet announced which upcoming vehicles will be outfitted with the redesigned engine.
