Ford recalls 692K Escape SUVs, C-Max hybrids over airbags, door handles

May 9, 2014
Ford is set to two separate recalls for more than 692,000 Escape SUVs and C-Max hybrids from the 2013 and 2014 model years.

The company has discovered a software problem with the airbag control systems in both models, preventing the side curtain airbags from properly deploying in certain rollover scenarios. The issue is not believed to have led to any injuries.

The Escape accounts for the vast majority of the vehicles in the campaigns, including approximately 591,000 units in the US market and 78,000 in Canada. The C-Max recall includes approximately 65,000 individual vehicles.

All of the Escapes with faulty airbag software have also been recalled for a second issue related to the exterior door handles, which are prone to bind. The issue can allow doors to open while the vehicle is driving.

The airbag problem will be resolved via software reprogramming, while the Escape door handles will be inspected and adjusted if needed.
