Mercedes is keeping official details about its next station wagon under wraps, but a leaked picture published by Italy’s Quattroruote magazine reveals the C wagon is nearly identical to its all-new four-door sedan counterpart from the tip of the front bumper to the B-pillar. Beyond that, it gains a set of horizontal tail lamps and a sloping roof line accented by brushed aluminum roof rails and a roof-mounted spoiler.
Mechanically, the wagon will launch with the same four-cylinder engines offered on the European-spec sedan. Buyers will be asked to choose between three gas engines that churn out 156, 184 and 211 horsepower, respectively, and a pair of diesels rated at 170 and 204 ponies. More engines (including a diesel-electric hybrid drivetrain) will be added to the lineup later in the production run, but rumors indicate the range-topping C63 AMG will not be offered as a wagon.
Most engines will be available with either a seven-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual unit. Rear-wheel drive will come standard, and all-wheel drive will be available at an extra cost.
Following its debut in Germany, the C-Class wagon is expected to go on sale across Europe this summer. The wagon will not take on the BMW 3-Series Sports Wagon in the United States but buyers after a more spacious C will reportedly get a sporty hatchback variant aimed squarely at the 3-Series GT.
