More than half of the total is included in a recall focused on the front safety lap belt cables, which can fatigue and separate over time. The issue affects Buck Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia SUVs with 2009-2014 model years, along with 2009-2010 Saturn Outlooks.
More than a million 2004-2008 Chevrolet Malibu and 2005-2008 Pontiac G6 sedans were built with a deficient shift cable that can wear out over time, resulting in mismatches of the gear position indicated by the shift lever.
Two minor recalls include 2015 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV SUVs, along with 2015 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD pickups. The SUVs suffer from an assembly error that can prevent the passenger airbag from fully deploying, while the pickups are vulnerable to fire from retention clips that hold the generator fuse block to the vehicle body.
“GM has added 35 product investigators since the beginning of 2014, and, including those announced today, has initiated 29 safety and non-compliance recalls in the U.S. so far this year,” the company said in a statement.
The latest round of recalls is expected to cost the company $400 million in the second quarter, on top of $1.5 billion in repair costs associated with other campaigns.
