Better pull over: Ariel reveals Atom police car

June 3, 2014

Though the insanity of the Dubai Police Force means we’re hardly strangers to the idea of supercar police vehicles, the latest addition to the U.K constabulary’s fleet might just top everything else we’ve seen.

Known as the Atom PL, the one-off creation is essentially a police-spec version of the superlight, ultra-high-performance Ariel Atom. Equipped with the requisite flashing lights and livery treatment, the Atom PL certainly looks the part, but the most significant change for police duty is an upgraded, supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder Honda engine that churns out 350 horsepower.

With just 1212 lbs. to move, that output is sufficient for a claimed zero-to-60 mph sprint of just 2.5 seconds. Suffice it to say such acceleration, combined with the car’s incredible agility, will ensure that few vehicles could ever dream of escaping from the Atom PL in a chase.

But breathe easy, perps – despite its potential as a pursuit vehicle, the Atom PL will be used primarily to promote motorcycle safety (Ariel is set to roll out its first motorcycle later this year).
