The Chinese-spec Cruze is not identical to the version that will land in the United States but it hints the next iteration of the nameplate breaks all ties with the current model thanks in part to an all-new front fascia with narrowed headlights and a sizable two-part grille. The sedan also boasts a more rakish belt line and a graceful, coupe-like roof, while the rear end features slim, angular tail lamps.
Inside the Cruze is moving up-scale thanks to a redesigned center stack, update gauge cluster and new-look steering wheel. Although difficult to discern from pictures, it looks as though the next-generation Cruze will also benefit from the use of more premium interior materials.
Originally slated to arrive in late 2014, the redesigned Cruze’s launch has reportedly been delayed until December 2015 due to “engineering changes.” Rumors have suggested that it will be the first GM product to ride on a new global platform that could serve as the basis for numerous compact sedan and crossover models in the future, such as the Chevy Volt and Equinox.
In a release detailing its new-generation EcoTec small engine family, GM stated that the Chinese-market Cruze will offer a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder that pairs with a new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and makes 140 horsepower along with 173 lb-ft of torque. A smaller 1.5-liter turbocharged Ecotec mill rated at 113 horsepower and 108 lb-ft. of torque will also be offered, though whether either powertrain will be offered in the States is unclear.
The U.S.-spec Cruze will likely be unveiled at next November’s Los Angeles Motor Show and go on sale next year as a 2016 model.
