Mitsubishi Mirage G4 sedan headed stateside?

July 12, 2014

It’s looking increasingly likely that Mitsubishi will bring the Mirage G4 sedan to the United States as a compliment to the unexpectedly popular Mirage subcompact hatchback.

Officially, Mitsubishi says it’s still evaluating the case for offering the Mirage G4 sedan in the states, but several signs suggest the automaker could be close to making a decision.

Through the first half of the year, Mirage volume totaled 8,267 units – while not exactly enough to make the best-sellers list, that’s already more than the 7,000 sales Mitsubishi had initially predicted for the entire year.

Expanding the U.S. Mirage lineup with the four-door would let Mitsubishi further capitalize on the favorable market response, and the brand’s decision to show the Mirage G4 at the 2014 Mitsubishi Owners Day in California this weekend suggests it could be laying the groundwork for just such a move.

Though not notable for its driving dynamics or overall refinement, the Mirage’s 44-mpg highway rating and modest purchase price are clearly resonating with some buyers, and the subcompact has been a big part of the Mitsubishi brand’s 30.2 percent sales increase in the U.S. through June.
