GM recall lookup site gives ‘misleading results,’ NHTSA orders fix

August 4, 2014
General Motors is facing fresh accusations of recall mishandling after its VIN lookup site was found to give ‘misleading’ results.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration claims GM’s website has been configured to confirm recall status for VINs only if the repair parts are already available.

Most recall campaigns are announced months before the company begins the repair process. Some owners have likely been led to believe that their recalled vehicle is not actually included in any campaign.

The NHTSA has ordered GM to fix its lookup website to properly flag all recalled VINs, regardless of repair status. The company has also been asked to notify previous users so VINs can be rechecked properly.

The company has recalled tens of millions of vehicles since the ignition-switch defect was acknowledged early this year.
