2016 Chevrolet Volt to bow at Detroit show

August 7, 2014
General Motors has confirmed that its next-generation Chevrolet Volt plug-in will make its world debut at next year’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Set to arrive as a 2016 model, the biggest news for the second-gen Volt will be the use of an all-new platform. The current Volt rides on a shared platform with the Chevrolet Cruze, but the 2016 Volt will get a dedicated electric vehicle architecture.

Thanks to that ground-up redesign, the new Volt will be significantly lighter than the model currently sitting in showrooms. With less weight to carry around, the Volt’s electric range should grow from 40 miles to somewhere in the 50-60 mile range.

But despite those new underpinnings, the 2016 Volt’s styling isn’t expected to change much. However, as seen in our latest spy photos, the 2016 Volt will adopt a more fastback-like roofline.

GM released one teaser image of the Volt, showing a portion of the plug-in’s revised rear end.

Although we haven’t been able to snap any interior shots just yet, our insiders say the 2016 Volt will offer seating for five – up one from today’s model.

Look for the 2016 Volt to arrive in Chevy showrooms sometime next year. The new model will retail for “thousands less” than the $34,185 Chevy charges for the 2014 Volt.
