BMW is reportedly preparing to launch a higher-performance X4 crossover within the next year.
The model is not expected to be a true X4 M, but rather an M Performance edition that may be called the M40i, according to rumors posted by Autocar.
Power is said to be provided by a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine, borrowed from the current X4 xDrive35i but retuned to produce somewhere in the range of 355 to 375 horsepower.
The xDrive35i currently sits atop the X4 range, providing 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque. M Sport appointments bring a few new body pieces with a more aggressive appearance, along with sport seats and retuned steering and suspension.
The M Performance model is believed to be in late-stage development, potentially heading for a 2015 launch.
