After just two years on the market, the coupe version of Hyundai’s Elantra compact has reached the end of the road.
While impossible to confirm due to Hyundai’s practice of lumping Elantra Coupe sales together with the Elantra sedan and GT hatchback, it’s likely that weak demand is the cause of the two-door’s death.
American buyers have hardly been clamoring for traditional entry-level coupes in recent times, and in retrospect, it was somewhat surprising that Hyundai decided to launch the Elantra Coupe in the first place. As it is, the segment will carry on with the Honda Civic Coupe and the Kia Forte Koup as its only entrants.
Like the Elantra sedan and GT hatchback, the Elantra Coupe had just received a facelift for the 2014 model year. Changes included a new 173-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder, an updated interior, a firmer suspension and Hyundai’s Blue Link telamatics service. A single trim level was offered, along with a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions.
