An AMG executive stated last year that Mercedes had no plans to give the AMG-treatment to the current GLK, but that won’t hold true for the next-generation of the GLK due out next year.
According to Car and Driver, the high-performance GLK will use a version of the 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 destined for the AMG GT sports car. Specific power figures are unknown at this time, but the GLK AMG should be good for between 475 and 503 horsepower, putting it ahead of the 400-horsepower Porsche Macan S.
Shifting duties will be handled by a seven-speed automatic gearbox. The GLK AMG will use Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel drive system to ensure all of that power actually reaches the ground.
Price-wise, the GLK AMG should slot somewhere between the roughly $50,000 GLA45 and the near-six-figure ML63. Something in the $60,000-$70,000 range sounds about right.
The next-generation Mercedes-Benz GLK – which we hear could be in line for a naming change – is expected to bow next year, with the AMG variant likely to trail by about six-months.
