2015 BMW X6 to start from $60,550

August 13, 2014

BMW has released pricing information for the second generation of its brash X6 crossover-coupe. MSRPs will start at $60,550 for the RWD X6 sDrive35i and $62,850 for the AWD X6 xDrive35i, both of which utilize a turbocharged straight-six, while the twin-turbo V8, AWD X6 xDrive50i will command $73,850 (prices include destination).

The redesigned X6 shares a platform and much else with the latest X5, a relationship that is evident in the two ‘ute’s shared headlights, twin-kidney grille and hood. The X6 establishes itself as the style-oriented sibling with a dramatic, space-robbing roofline and a host of other unique touches, including upswept character lines over the rear wheels and sleeker taillights.

The X6 also gains a model-specific lower front valence that attempts to simultaneously foster impressions of performance – with aero-enhancing “air curtains” that connect to “air breathers” behind the front wheels – and ruggedness, denoted by what BMW calls “matte-silver underbody protection.” Despite that touch, few X6s are expected to wander off the pavement.

Inside, the X6′ cabin is lifted directly from the X5 with only minor detail changes; that means it boasts higher-quality materials and a more elegant design than the outgoing X6. A 10.2-inch infotainment screen, controlled by BMW’s iDrive, is standard, and buyers can choose from a bevy of wood and aluminum trim options.

Naturally, cargo capacity is compromised due to the styling theatrics. Behind the rear seats, there’s 20.5 cubic feet of stowage space, a figure that expands to 53.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded – that’s down from 66 cubic feet in the X5 and also less than the old X6′s 59 cubes.

At least the cargo hold is easy to access thanks to a new hands-free power tailgate that uses sensors to interpret a kicking motion under the rear bumper as “open sesame,” thus eliminating the need to put down groceries or gear to access the trunk.

Those conversant with BMW’s current lineup will be familiar with the X6′ engine options – X6 xDrive35i and X6 xDrive50i models return, powered by a 300 horsepower, 300 lb-ft of torque turbocharged straight-six and a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 with 445 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque, respectively. The eight-cylinder’s output represents gains of 45 horsepower and 35 lb-ft of torque over last year’s mill.

New for 2015 is the entry-level X6 sDrive35i, which teams the inline-six with rear-wheel-drive. All-wheel-drive remains standard on other models. All X6s shift through an eight-speed automatic transmission that, along with engine management, throttle sensitivity and suspension settings, can be adjusted by the driver through a standard Driving Dynamics Control system.

With an aluminum hood, plastic fenders and increased implentation of high-strength steel, among other measures, BMW has been able to shave 35 to 55 lbs. from the X6′s curb weight, depending on equipment. That helps increase fuel economy to 19/27 city/highway mpg for the X6 sDrive35i, 18/27 mpg for the X6 xDrive35i, and 15/22 mpg for the X6 xDrive50i.

For those seeking more than the base model, BMW will offer uplevel xLine ($2,500) and performance-focused M Sport ($3,500) trim levels. A dynamic damper control/rear air suspension setup ($1,500), Dynamic Handling Package ($4,500) and Bang & Olufsen stereo ($4,500) are highlights from the lengthy options list.

The 2015 X6, which will be produced at BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, is slated to hit the market late this year. All-wheel-drive models will arrive first, followed by the rear-drive X6 sDrive35i.
