The National Insurance Crime Bureau has released its list of most stolen cars in the US in 2013. Topping the list were Honda’s bread-and-butter models, Accords and Civics from the 1990s.
The NICB says that although auto thefts increased in 2012, the FBI predicts an overall drop of 3.2 percent in theft rate when 2013′s final numbers are released later this year. The total tally is expected to stay under 700,000. The last time the figure was this low was in 1967. The total is also less than half that of the highest year on record, 1991, which saw 1.66 million auto thefts.
Despite the downtick, this still amounts to one car taken every 45 seconds. The NICB estimates that the losses will total $4 billion.
