Renault unveils 500-horsepower R.S. 01 track car

August 27, 2014
Renault has traveled to the Moscow Motor Show to introduce a new sports car christened R.S. 01. The car was designed exclusively to compete in a new Renault-sponsored one-make race series that will follow the automaker’s World Series event around Europe.

The R.S 01 is powered by a mid-mounted Nissan GT-R-derived 3.8-liter V6 engine de-tuned to generate about 500 horsepower and 442 lb-ft. of torque, enough to send the coupe to a top speed of over 186 mph. The twin-turbocharged six spins the rear wheels via a seven-speed sequential gearbox controlled by shift paddles mounted behind the steering wheel.

Adjustable shock absorbers manufactured by -hlins and a braking system that combines carbon discs with six-piston calipers up front keep the power in check, allowing the driver to safely push the R.S. 01 to the limit. The car rides on lightweight 18-inch center-locking wheels wrapped by purpose-designed Michelin tires.

The R.S. 01 stretches 185 inches long, 78 inches wide and just 43 inches tall. It tips the scale at a little over 2,400 pounds thanks largely to a carbon fiber monocoque designed and built by famed components manufacturer Dallara. Crash boxes on both ends ensure the R.S. 01 complies with the FIA’s LMP1 2014 standards.

Visually, the R.S. 01 wears an aggressive design that is noticeably inspired by the DeZir show car Renault presented at the 2010 edition of the Paris Motor Show. The front end is characterized by an oversized Renault emblem, numerous carbon fiber components including a splitter, pronounced wheel arches and a large NACA duct on the hood, while the rear end features a wide spoiler, a pair of exhaust tips integrated into the bumper and long LED tail lamps.

The R.S. 01 was designed to be as aerodynamic as possible. For example, the two fins mounted on either side of the bumper generate vortices that limit the turbulence created by the wheels as they spin.

Although interior pictures were not published, Renault promises the R.S. 01 is equipped with a lone bucket seat and a six-point harness.

The R.S. 01 is larger and more powerful than Renault’s upcoming Alpine-badged sports car, and the two cars do not share major components. The R.S. 01 is not street legal and whether or not it will spawn a production model in the coming years is not known.

The one-make race series that the R.S. 01 is designed to compete in is scheduled to kick off in 2016. Renault has not published pricing information and it has not revealed how many examples of the coupe it plans on building.
