Ford details F-150′s aerodynamic, aesthetic improvements for 2015

August 27, 2014
Ford has praised its designers for creating the “toughest looking” and most aerodynamically efficient F-150 ever.

The company claims to have succeeded in improving the 2015 F-150′s drag coefficient, without sacrificing the squared-off edges that have been credited with helping make the current model the best-selling pickup.

The truck’s sharp, boxy shape gives it a tough appearance, but actually the key to the design is aerodynamic efficiency – getting the most out of the shape,” said F-150 design manager Brad Richards. “We made F-150 look tough and capable, while also reducing wind resistance.”

Richards suggest the sharp edges actually help improve airflow around the vehicle, with rear corners that help allow air to cleanly detach from the vehicle with reduced turbulence and drag. A duct under the headlight helps channel air through the wheel housing, while a trim piece fills the gap between the cab and the bed to prevent air from getting trapped.

Other considerations include a flush-mounted windshield, box sides that are slightly narrower than the cab, and a tailgate top that actually serves as a spoiler.

The hallmark beltline along the outside mirrors is the strongest piece of Built Ford Tough DNA,” Richards added. “That’s inspired by heavy equipment such as cranes and bulldozers. It looks good, but it also improves driver visibility.”

Interestingly, the company has remained silent on final fuel-efficiency figures for its new pickup. The 700-pound-lighter construction and EcoBoost engine option are rumored to achieve at least 30 mpg.
